Role model Miss Pru got it all – by herself, and on her own terms

31.12.2021

Powered by adidas, Weekend Turn Up interviewed Miss Pru (Prudence Sebalo), an award-winning, self-created, self-managed DJ, radio show host, singer, songwriter, producer and business woman.

If ever an aspiring artist wanted a role model, they need look no further than Miss Pru.

Born in Sedibeng, in the Vaal Triangle, she was influenced by music from an early age, jazz in particular, although the genre that she makes music for right now is hip hop. But not the US/gold chains kind of vibes, “I bring an African element, an African influence to it,” she says.

Having enjoyed and appreciated collabs with dozens of top artists, and not happy with the way “next level gatekeepers” shut out new talent, she started Sunset Fridays – a live streaming platform that shares the music of up-and-coming artists.

In her own life, she might not have become such a successful, award-winning DJ were it not for a DJ at her school who was happy to teach such a keen youngster. On the other hand, Miss Pru is such a force of nature that even if that DJ had totally ignored her, she’d probably have stormed the turntables and done her own thing.

Her videos are legendary. These aren’t music videos as you know them. They’re mini-movies with music and storylines. Fab.u.lous costumes, world-class lighting and special effects – as special as Miss Pru herself. Watch our exclusive interview and be awed by awesomeness (in a very warm, open and relatable kind of way).

Role model.
