On the Weekend Turn Up: Kyeezi

Let’s hear it for Goodhope FM’s new Great Drive host and Metro FM Top 40 host, DJ Khayna “Kyeezi” Siyengo. Also known as “The Tall Wonder”, this Cape Town based DJ lives and breathes music and has big plans for the future of the Cape Town music scene.

Tell us more about how you got to be a DJ on Goodhope  and Metro FM?

The influence that hip hop has had on me is just something else. Sort of got my blueprint on how to believe in myself through this music. Before I do anything major, I play hip hop to get me through whatever I need to do. The lyrics and the stories of some artists I relate to so much, and I implement some of the teachings in the music in my daily life. I’m just a hustler trying to make it into the corporate block, by being myself and my way.

What are your plans for the Great Drive show? How are you going to change things up?
The plan is to build a Great show, and I know it’s going to take some time. I’m learning a lot and I’m trying new things. I can’t say much but you’ll have to tune in to experience it.

If you could travel back in time, what message would you send to a younger Khanya?

First would be, dude bleach your hair now, because you’re going to be too old to be this funky (lol). Second, take care of the health buddy, it’s not cool just getting stuck in the work and forgetting you health. Third, talk more, and that business you’ve been thinking of starting, well do it.

How did you get the stage name “KYEEZI”?

There was a time when Lil Wayne was the top dog in the game, his nickname was Lil Weezy. Me and my friends at varsity thought it would be dope to change our names, so Mawetu became Maweezy, Mthetho became Mteezy and Khanya became Kyeezi – I just kept mine. When asked to change it (and yes, they have tried) if Jay-z is Jay-z, Kyeezi is Kyeezi 🙂

Kyeezi’s favourite verse of all time: Jay-z on the Power Remix

“Rumble, young man, rumble
Life is a trip, so sometimes we gonna stumble
You gotta go through pain in order to become you
But once the world numbs you, you’ll feel like it’s only one you
Now you got the power to do anything you want to
Until you ask yourself, “Is this what it’s all come to?”
Looking at life through sunglasses and a sunroof

But do you have the power to get out from up under you”

We have spotted some beef on social from a certain DJ. What was your reaction to that?

There’s no beef at all. I have a lot respect for all my colleagues, being in entertainment is not easy. Everyone has a opinion and they are entitled to it. I just try to remain focused on the task at hand that needs me to show up, the rest can miss me honestly.

How tall exactly is The Tall Wonder?

I’m about 6 ft 4, 1.93m.

At which gigs will we catch you this year?

I’ve got my first birthday tour #ForeverYoung currently with SKYY Vodka; 3 cities, JHB, PTA and the finale in CPT on the 28th of April. Unfortunately I’m not allowed to share all the other gigs coming my way, but just keep you eyes on my social @kyeezi (everywhere).

As a DJ, you’re seen as the authority on music. What should we be listening to?

I wouldn’t call myself an authority, but just someone who genuinely digs this culture and the music. We should be listening to our local guys who are killing it. The most anticipated album just came of 3T – YoungstaCPT should be on your playlist, Shane Eagle, A-Reece, Nasty C, Rouge, VIIBES. Like the list is long, and we could do this for a while. I try to share the music I’m feeling on my socials and in my sets.

Who are your favourite local acts?

AKA, Da Les, YoungstaCPT, Cassper Nyovest, Tshego, VIIBES, Shane Eagle, Reason, DJ Speedsta, Khuli Chana, DJ Dimplez, Sipho the Gift, Muzi, Yanga Chief – I could go on. I mess with a lot of dudes

If you could choose any platforms for up-and-coming DJs to share their sounds, which one would you choose?

MixCloud, SoundCloud. I live online and that’s where I find all the dope stuff.
