sportscene’s first ever Capsule Fest went down on Saturday, 16 September 2017 in the cultural hub of Newtown, Johannesburg, and fam, it was a jump! The streets of Jozi came alive when the coolest kids from all over the country streamed into Mary Fitzegerald Square to turn up in a space that was transformed into a cultural playground to celebrate the things that unite us all: sneaker and youth culture, music and people. Capsule Fest was a space customised for urban culture where South Africa’s cool kids collided with the dopest streetwear brands and artists, along with headline acts which included multi-award winning South African superstar Nasty C and American platinum-selling hip-hop artist A$AP Ferg – who had his first ever South African performance at Capsule 2017.

Wanna know the best thing about Capsule? Everyone felt free to lose themselves in the world that we created for them. They felt free to go ALL OUT and hold nothing back. People expressed themselves and danced like the world was watching. Nasty C and A$AP Ferg had us singing and jumping along to every word. Furthermore, the sportscene Capsule Fest stage alongside the CONVERSE Waves stage featured over 30 of SA’s hottest line-up of artists, including hostess Moozlie, Shane Eagle, PatrickXXLee, Champagne69, who blew us out of the water with their performance, the supermaga AKA, J Molley, Da Lez, Sho Madjozi, DJ Speedsta, Yanga Chief and headline acts Nasty C and A$AP Ferg.

When it came to each brand activation, Nike hooked everyone up with free ink in their live tattoo studio and had the connect for fresh cuts with a barber on site. adidas Originals had an impressive photo-booth and VIP area while Sneaker Lab had us kicking back for professional sneaker cleaning sessions. CONVERSE had the sickest skate park where kids came to thrash it out.

Cut Throat hooked everyone up with customised Capsule gear and Reebok showed off the littiest sneaker silhouettes of all time. We brought the plug with our dopest merch available. Last but not least: Nasty C confirmed his collab with Redbat – so keep it locked here for an official release date of Redbat x Nasty C. Keep scrolling to peep some of the action that went down at sportscene Presents Capsule Fest.

More about Capsule Fest

Capsule Fest is an urban youth festival that aims to celebrate and be the Mecca for South African street culture in all its forms on a yearly basis. 2017’s kick off was abuzz with over 30 local artists and DJs including AKA, Sho Madjozi, DJ Speedsta, Da Les, Gemini Major and Yanga, two live music stages, seven urban brands, a skate park and customising booth by Converse, barber and tattoo parlour by Nike, a sneaker cleaning booth by Sneaker Lab, gaming area, a beer garden and food village.

“The street culture scene in South Africa has never been this big and impactful, yet the industry lacks a safe and family friendly event that brings all these street culture elements together in one place”, says sportscene’s head of marketing, Jonathan Muir. “We believe Capsule Fest offers the market just that and hence we’re super excited to host the first of what will hopefully be many editions to come.”
