We kicked back with the Redbat Unwritten models and got to know the person behind all the flames. Our first Meet the Models feature is none other than Faith K, who’s passionate about performing, travelling and getting people on her vibe.
What is your name and where are you from?
I go by the name Faith Kay from Johannesburg, Centurion born and raised.
How have your surroundings shaped you in a creative sense?
Yeah definitely I mean like everything I do has to do with who I’m around or the things I talk about, personal experiences, my friends’ experiences. I prefer to speak about real things than imaginary things for example I won’t talk about a car like a Porsche if I don’t have a Porsche but I can dream about it. I can say, “In my dream I have a Porsche”. My surroundings definitely shape who I am and how I move as an artist and what type of situations I say ‘Yes’ to. The type of opportunities I look out for and people I want to be around me every day.
when did you first start rapping? How did you get started?
I started singing in my high school choir. I use to aspire to just be an entertainer, I didn’t want to become a singer in all honesty, I wanted to be an all-round entertainer. I wanted to become a comedian, not that I’m funny, I’m just ‘stupid.’ I feel like there’s so many types of singers out there who are similar. Everyone thinks that when you sing it’s supposed to be R n B and that you can’t sing and rap altogether.
do you have any other related interests?
Other interests that I have are modelling related. I feel like I’d be into the whole ‘Victoria Secrets Vibe’, one day, watch out!
What was your introduction to the hip hop scene?
My introduction to the hip hop scene started off with me watching Step-Up, the movie, which also sparked my dancing interest. I use to dance in the studio as a ballet dancer and then I went to the ‘streets’ and there I learnt hip-hop and from there I started seeing the culture. Everything was so dope and everyone was so united.
At what age did you start creating and in which mediums?
I started creating music round about two years ago, I was 21. The first time I got into the studio was around that time. I didn’t know what I was doing to be honest, I just went there and did my hook. I was wasn’t supposed to be recording initially, instead I was there to help my friend out with a tagline for his brand, and instead I ended up recording my first song.
What colour would you consider your personality and why?
My personality is definitely a rainbow colour, I can be yellow today, or red tomorrow. Brighter colours are definitely more me.
Do you have anyone that you consider your mentor? How has their help or advice shaped you?
Yeah I definitely have a mentor and that helps me with my music, the reason why I took my music seriously was because of DJ Dimplez. He listened to my song and encouraged me to start taking it seriously. From there on wards I just started recording. He makes it easier because he never makes me feel stupid or feel like what I’m working on is pointless. He always tells me to be myself and to make music for myself, because someone out there is bound to like it.
Who are your top 3 favourite Hip Hop artists of all time?
I feel like Nadia Nakai is doing it for the girls right now! Personally I feel like Nadia is killing it. I love all the women who are doing it for us all. But in order of favourites, number one is Faith K, number two is Nadia and number three is Nadia *laughs*
What do you hope to accomplish this year?
I want to reach out to a different type of audience, and I want people to know my music. I want to perform more, I want to travel more. I want to make people understand my vibe. I want people to know that there’s a Faith Kay out there, like there’s an actual unicorn out there.
