On the Weekend Turn Up: Nelz SA
Set aside some time this weekend because you’re gonna be spending a lot of it listening to Durban based artist Nelz SA, who also goes by the name “Queen of the coast”.
Your latest single is titled “Thuggie”. Tell us more what this track is about and where you found inspiration for it?
The single came about after spending a lot of time on the road doing press tours, shows and collaborations with different types of musicians. My supporters then started calling me “Thuggie” because of how I maneuver. That really stuck with me. When I was back in studio I made it a point to record a song titled “Thuggie” and just let people know it’s real! I always say if it’s real put it in a song.
South Africa’s hip-hop scene is male dominated and also currently being ruled by a few really strong female rappers. How do you plan on disrupting and leaving your own trace on the hip-hop game?
The plan is simple… Make music! I’m an artist and my purpose is to make music for the people. So I will always make music and just keep finding ways of getting it to as many parts of the world as I can. That’s what I want to be known for. Great music!
From what we can see on Apple Music, you’ve been producing and dropping tracks since 2015. Do you have any help when it comes to the production of these sounds or do you do it all yourself?
I hate working alone! I feel like there’s so many creative minds out there and I try and work with as many producers as I can. It helps me to keep growing as an artist. Of course the energy must be positive and very authentic. Whoever I work with, I pay a lot of attention to the energy I surround myself with.
NELZ ON YOUR WEEKEND TURN UP PLAYLIST
What platforms do you use to help you produce music?
I’ve co-produced quite a few of my records and I must say FL Studio does it for me!
Are you signed to a label or are you gonna do it all independent?
Indie!! But like I mentioned I am someone who loves working with other people so I’m definitely open to partnerships but the first priority is owning my music.
What’s your favourite song that you’ve ever produced?
It has to be ‘Show Me’ taken from the ‘Lovies EP’.
Give us 5 songs that have shaped your music?
It’s gonna be hard to choose but here goes:
1) Lil Kim – Lighers Up
2) Busta Rhymes – Conglomerate
3) Nelz – The Top
4) Stogie T – Broke People
5) Pro Kid – Sekele
What do you listen to when you need inspiration and where do you go?
Honestly I always run my records back from baaaack when I started. And I believe inspiration is all around me, I could never run out, I just need to channel it.
I’m an artist and my purpose is to make music for the people. So I will always make music and just keep finding ways of getting it to as many parts of the world as I can. That’s what I want to be known for. Great music!
